After skipping the London show season, Freja is back on the catwalks in Milan. Already walking with three looks for Gucci, she's making her first day a busy one with appearances at Alberta Ferretti and possibly even No. 21 Allessandro dell Acqua. I guess she really was resting up for what will hopefully be a busy Milan Fashion Week.
It's great to see her relationship with the Gucci brand continue it's long run, but the big question on my mind is, will she walk for Prada tomorrow? After making her international debut on its runway over 5 years ago, Freja was bypassed for the show last season since she didn't fit the overall aesthetic. What will Miuccia be going for this season? Is Freja still a Russell Marsh favorite? All the answers to these questions and more come tomorrow.

In Milan?
The Burberry Prosum show was today and Freja didn't walk. Fashionologie has an interesting report up:
Of course, Freja could have just skipped London altogether to get some much needed rest. She didn't walk in any of the week's other big shows: Julien MacDonald, Christopher Kane, Pringle of Scotland, Jaeger London (the last two being brands that she's done campaigns for in the past). Who knows? I guess we just wait and see until tomorrow if Freja shows up on the Gucci catwalk.....
"According to rumors, last night, Gucci demanded all girls cast in their show fly into Milan, pronto. That means Burberry's usual all-star London lineup — Freja Beha Erichsen and Lily Donaldson among them — were already gone; Burberry did nab Jourdan Dunn and Lisanne De Jong, however."We know that Freja is both a Burberry and Gucci favorite, walking in both shows countless times throughout her career. However, I suppose this means that she's more of a Gucci girl since she didn't show up at the Burberry show. Makes sense considering she's been a Gucci campaign girl many times while Burberry continues to stick with British faces.

Gucci Behind the Scenes Video
I love this video (and I absolutely love the entire Gucci campaign now as well). The whole concept is very cool, and very fitting for the FW0910 Gucci collection. From what I can gather, each model embodied a different persona during the shoot. Freja was "The Unbendable," and you can see her part in the video starting around 3:40. If you pay close attention you can get the other models' personae as well.
Old "Making Of" Gucci videos have simply featured models dancing and moving around, but this one is different. This one was purposefully made to become a behind the scenes video. Videos from past seasons always seemed like an afterthought. While the photographers were shooting the campaign, someone just happened to be taking video so Gucci took the footage, set it to some music and called it a behind the scenes video.
This one differs in that it has a concept and the models were filmed specifically to convey that concept. Like I said before, each model played a role during the shoot, and each model has a segment during this video. Footage is set to an overlay of the other models' voices and if you listen closely you can pick out distinctive one like Raquel's, Abbey Lee's and Anja's. They all utter descriptive words and phrases about each other, but it's unclear to me if their mutterings refer to the model's persona on set or persona in real life.
Here is what I could make out from Freja's segment. She is The Unbendable. She's tough and hard. Edgy and straight down the line (according to Abbey Lee). She's up for any adventure (according to Anja). She's steady, unbendable, loyal and she doesn't beat around the bush. These are all qualities I would associate with Freja, but of course I don't really know the real her. Just the "her" that she allows me to see through her work. So maybe there is a third persona at play here? The video persona, Freja's real persona, and the persona that we see as fans.
Anyway, I'll spare you by not delving further into that thought. Freja also says something about herself, but it was hard to make out. I heard "I'm the one that talks a lot." Did anyone else hear that as well? By the way, I love her voice. So unique sounding and slightly raspy with that Danish accent.
The ending of the video is quite impressive. It starts at 4:28 with the video camera slowly panning out to a full view of all the models moving and swaying. The flash from the photographic camera adds this amazing strobe light effect and the whole impression is quite breathtaking and stunning to my eyes. After seeing this video, I think more people will be able to appreciate what Inez and Vinoodh were going for when they shot this campaign. It's about models, glamor, and getting lost in a life you aspire to have.

Gucci FW0910
I feel like I can finally post about this now that more Gucci campaign images have been released. I wanted to reserve my judgment until I had a chance to see the images and truly absorb them. The opinion I now have about the campaign differs radically from my initial reaction, so there is truth to the old adage of "think before you speak."
The campaign was shot by Inez and Vinoodh and features a who's who of current "it" models and established veterans. The impression the campaign gives off is very much in line with the glam rock/club scene theme of the collection. This is something Inez and Vinoodh do very well. If you look at their past two Gucci campaigns, they've matched their aesthetics to the aesthetics of the clothes.
So the look of this season's campaign really came as no surprise. It's the same concept we've seen for the past two seasons. You have a plethora of models haphazardly placed around a set location that has some relevance to the overall theme of the runway collection. From behind the scenes videos, we know that the models are told to dance and move around as they are being photographed. And judging by the poses and body language in these images, the models did the same thing for this campaign. It's actually quite amazing how the same formula can have such drastically different results. But this is an artistic concept that must work well for Gucci. Otherwise you would think that they would have changed direction...especially in this economic climate.
(On a side note, I just have to wonder if I & V took a little bit of inspiration this time around from the Mellow Yellow Gap ad? Does anyone else think so? Maybe it's just the white background and multitude of models that triggers this association for me.)
Anyway, I don't hate this campaign nor do I think that the models look atrocious. If you go by the comments on tFS, this is the worst campaign of the season and completely ridiculous. People are criticizing everything about this, but after much thought I have to say this campaign is successful in what it purports to be. Artistically, I think it's a little lacking (but certainly not hideous). Commercially, I think it totally sells and that's what an ad campaign is supposed to do. We have editorials and magazine covers to satisfy our creative appetites.
The ads may not be visually beautiful or appealing at first glance, but they are very enthralling. There is so much intensity and palpable emotion running throughout the shots. The compositions are engaging, the models poses are unique, the facial expressions are certainly not empty, and your gaze is really drawn in because there is so much to look at. The use of cropping and perspective add visual interest as well. I think we forget that ads don't have to be omg stunning and gorgeous in order to be effective. You want the potential customer to pay more attention to your product. You do not want to give them an easily digestible image that is also easily forgotten in a matter of seconds.
This campaign works because it is selling a lifestyle concept. Just like past Gucci campaigns, this one portrays a complete fantasy life. You have a collection of clothes and beautiful models all interacting with each other and with you, the consumer. A just released study claims that celebrities used in ads aren't as effective as advertisers think they are. So perhaps it is smart of Gucci to rely on models to sell an attitude. It is, after all, what they know how to do and heaven forbid we hire people with the actual skill set to do a job. A lot of the complaints are about the models' poses and awkward expressions, but perhaps there is a method behind all this visual "madness."
Take this bit of anecdotal evidence: In the business of direct mail you send letters to people in order to solicit money. Studies have shown that letters with strategically placed typos have a higher return rate than letters that are grammatically perfect. No one knows why this is the case, but the main theory is that people catch the typos and read the letter more closely. As they read the letter to find other typos, they actually absorb the message of the letter and are more likely to respond and give you money.
In the same vein, Inez and Vinoodh's campaigns for Gucci have perhaps been visually off-putting to us since we all live and breathe fashion and want to see something beautiful all the time. But to the average consumer, I think the campaign draws you into looking, and as you look you find yourself admiring the products. And before you know it, you're purchasing the products and the ad has done it's job.
All of this being said, I think Freja is totally working it, as are the other models. I think she's expanding her modeling catalog because she's giving poses we've never seen from her before. It feels like she was able to let loose on the set and just go for it. I'm happy to see her and her tattoos prominently featured, and she is totally giving off a glam rock vibe. Jaime Bochart fits in surprisingly well and Anja is quickly winning me over once again. I'm also always happy to see Raquel and Abbey Lee. I can't wait for more images and the behind the scenes video! I'd also love to hear your thoughts on this. :)

(For the FW0809 "babushka" collection, the outdoor field location conjured up images of frolicking Russian peasants.)

(The campaign for the SS09 collection of bright colors and tropical prints was set outdoors among a grove of palm trees and other exotic plant species.)

A Look Back at Gucci Runway
While we're waiting for images to come out from the upcoming FW0910 Gucci campaign, and since it's been relatively quiet news-wise, I thought now would be a perfect time to take a look back through Freja's career walking the Gucci runway.
There is no doubt that Freja is a Gucci girl through and through. She's already starred in three campaigns and a runway show just isn't the same without her. When she missed walking during the SS09 season, people took notice. Freja has that glam rock look that suits the Gucci aesthetic, so when the two meet the result is chic, cool and enviable. Take a look.
It's pretty interesting to see the evolution of Frida Giannini's style since she took over as creative director after the Tom Ford era. Many have criticized her designs in recent seasons as being too commercial and too much like Gucci-copying Zara-copying Gucci. Nevertheless, I'll always have a weakness for Gucci because I loved the FW0809 season's take on the "babushka."And I melt a little bit every time I see those knee high boots with the long fringe.
Anyway, if you think I've missed a show please leave a comment. I think Freja may have done a Gucci Cruise show very early in her career but I'm not positive and I can't find any pictures. So if you have them, let me know!

Gucci Girl
The rumors can finally be put to rest because it is official: Freja is a Gucci campaign girl for the fifth time! She's been cast in the upcoming FW0910 campaign along with Raquel Zimmerman, Natasha Poly and Jacquetta Wheeler. Those are the only confirmed names so far. Earlier speculation put the total model count at nine, so if those rumors are to be believed, we are still missing five names. Members at tFS have thrown around the likes of Anja Rubik, Lily Donaldson, and Abbey Lee Kershaw as possibilities for the other models. And considering that Inez and Vinoodh are shooting, I wouldn't be surprised to see Eniko Mihalik either. But we'll have to wait for more official word.
After going through a slight slump campaign wise these last few seasons, Freja is back in top form nabbing both the Chanel and Gucci campaigns. A total coup for any model as both are big name, blue-chip campaigns. This is a repeat of her SS07 campaign season and I couldn't be happier. It's just reassuring to see that Freja is still at the top after all these seasons, without the help of Steven Meisel I might add. (Yes, I am still bitter about the fact that he won't work with her, but that's another story.) Freja's looks fit perfectly with the Gucci brand, and while many people are already complaining about the boring casting, I am excited about the reunion of the three Gucci by Gucci perfume campaign models.
Anyway, the official news was broken by tFS member JSYK but there have been whsipers around the internet for weeks that Freja was in. And just yesterday I came across more evidence that I feel I can post about now. While I was reading this article in the NY Times about Frida Giannini and the return of the boyfriend suit, this quote immediately stuck out in my mind:

But she has an ability to hit on the mood of the moment, whether it is the new advertising campaign she is shooting in London with the photographic duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin or her “fetish,” thigh-high boots. Then I was browsing Freja's "official website" and came across this answer from her in response to a fan question:
i was actually in london when my family celebrated easter, but ive been home for a day now hanging out with my friends, cooking, jammin, had a lot of fun, but tomorrow im off to new york, city ive missed!I don't think Freja travels to London a lot unless it's for work, so here we have even more evidence if you're willing to believe that the official site is legitimate. And New York? Wonder what Freja could be doing there? Shooting another campaign perhaps? Or maybe an editorial? It's fun to think about the possibilities, isn't it?
